3rd Software Engineering Postgraduates Workshop

Co-Located Workshop in the 5th Malaysian Software Engineering Conference

The Third  Software  Engineering Postgraduates  Workshop  (SEPoW 2011)  is  a  forum  for Master’s  and  Ph.D. postgraduates  who  conduct  research  in  software  engineering. The  first SEPoW 2009 was hosted  for  the  first time  in  Malaysia  in  conjunction  with  16th  Asia Pacific Software  Engineering Conference (APSEC 2009). SEPoW 2011 will serve as a platform for Software Engineering postgraduate students to showcase their research, to provide them with feedback from a panel of senior researchers and to facilitate interaction among the participants.

The workshop consists of a two main sessions:

  • Hands-on Tutorial:  The two hand-on tutorials are the hand-on tutorial for writing journals papers and the hand-on tutorial for writing research proposal. The aim of the first tutorial is to enhance participants’ skills in writing for reputable journals and particular in software engineering fields. The aim of the second tutorial is to equip participants with skills to write quality research proposals in software engineering research.
  • Research Presentation and Discussion: Presentations and discussions will be conducted in English. The workshop welcomes software engineering postgraduates who have completed extended research proposal stage to submit, participate and grab the opportunity to gain beneficial feedbacks and mock viva of their research work from experienced researchers. The presenters are required to write a short research proposal paper for this session.

 

The goals of the workshop include:

  • To  deliver  fruitful and  constructive  but critical feedbacks  and  advices  to  the  selected  research postgraduates on their research thesis.
  • To  provide  the  opportunity  to  meet experts from  different backgrounds  working on  topics  related  to software engineering.
  • To  interact  with  other research  students  and  stimulate an  exchange  of  ideas and  suggestions  among participants.

Submission Instructions

Postgraduates should submit the paper to dayang@utm.my and dayang@fsksm.utm.my with the subject “SEPoW 2011 Submission”. The paper should adopt IEEE template and must not exceed the maximum 5 pages on A4 size page layout. The file must be named as “LastNameFirstName-Topic”. The topic should refer to the topics of interest. The paper must include student’s name as the main author and supervisor’s name as the co-author, and complete address as in the paper format. Submitted papers will be reviewed by the dedicated program committee with respect to the overall quality including presentation, future impact of the research and the likely benefit to the postgraduates who will attend the workshop. Selected papers will be published in local proceedings with ISBN.

The submitted paper must give a clear description of the research work and in particular:

 

  • give a clear problem definition of the research,
  • motivation  of  the  proposed  research,  i.e. state  the  reason  of  conducting the  research  work,  and  what would be the benefits from the research,
  • review on background and related research,
  • proposed work or solutions to address the problems and justification of the proposal,
  • research methodology, its plan and progress,
  • problems encountered (if any) and
  • expected results and contributions*.

*Note that more advanced stage of research may include results and discussions of the evaluated work.
